The human body is a remarkable, complex set of systems that need to be maintained in order to maximize its ability to function properly throughout life. While we normally just think of improving health as exercising, health comes in many forms, from physical health to mental health. Therefore, it’s imperative that we do our best to take care of our body. We only get one. Of course there are numerous ways of being healthy. You don’t have to stick exclusively to the list below, but I have selected activities which are not just healthy, but are enjoyable and provide varying rewards in terms of skill development.
- Learning – so overlooked. mental health important. dementia etc as we age, must prevent. learn however you like. mental stimulation
1. Exercise
This one should be fairly obvious. Whatever form of exercise you pick, it’s almost certainly good for you. Yes I know it can be tough to start, but once you do, it becomes the one thing we do not regret. Once you get into a routine, it can be very therapeutic and you may find you can’t stay without it now. Not to mention the plethora of benefits including stress relief, reduced blood pressure and quite simply, the reduced likelihood of dying early. Walking, jogging, hitting the gym, swimming, the list goes on. Pick one (or more) that you like and get your butt moving. You won’t regret it.
2. Cooking
Cooking can be immensely satisfying. It really is a skill that everyone should have. Cook something. Anything. It doesn’t have to be some Michelin star-worthy dish, but learning how to sustain yourself nutritionally is an essential skill to have. Whether you’re cooking for yourself or trying to impress someone, the art of cooking is a great way to occupy your time. Not to mention, with your hands covered in food, you’ll be forced to avoid picking up your phone and start wasting time. You’ll learn valuable skills, eat healthier and save a ton of money compared to eating out every night. And honestly, who doesn’t love someone who can make a great dish?
3. DIY
Be the handyman that you were always destined to be! Ok I might be getting a little carried away here, but don’t get me wrong, DIY (Do It Yourself) is a great way to occupy your time. Especially as a man, dare I say it is our duty to be at least reasonably capable at making/fixing things around the house. A little furniture repair here and a bit of electrical work there isn’t too difficult to pull off. You’ll be grateful for it. Not needing to call anyone and being able to do things yourself really is quite fulfilling. So get yourself a toolbox, pick a project you like and get to work. You’ll earn that reward once you change that plugpoint.
4. Reading
They say reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. It’s a shame that most people have grown out of touch with reading books. We should never take for granted how our mind is functioning. Deterioration of the mind as we grow older is a scary thing. While we can’t verify a direct link, there is something to be said about the fact that most, if not all successful people read. There are so many ways to consume books nowadays, from physical paperbacks and eReaders to audiobooks. Reading out in nature or with a cup of coffee is something that will put your mind & body at ease. So pick up that book and go on a journey.
5. Martial Arts
The art of self-defense is a beautiful thing. It’ll enhance your body, your mind, self-discipline and may well save your life one day. You can take up a traditional martial art such a karate or taekwondo or go for a mixed martial art (MMA) approach as is becoming quite popular nowadays. Given this surge in popularity, you can quite easily find an outlet for all your violent tendencies (please don’t start fighting everyone you see). As with the other items in this list, it’s a great skill to add to your arsenal of manly abilities. Finally, we must not forget one of its biggest benefits….you’ll become a badass who is not to be messed with.
6. Model-Making
This can be another great way to keep yourself occupied. You get a lot of models now with varying intricacies based on your level/interests. From buildings to cars, to the iconic ship in a bottle, models not only make nice decorative items, but they also make great gifts. So next time your eyes are strained from staring at your phone for hours, grab a drink and go make something cool.
