Fall has arrived!
It’s the most fashionable time of year again. As the leaves of the trees come off, the different clothes and layering comes on. With most people staying home this year of course, the more eccentric looks aren’t really a thing now. But whether you’re going for work, the supermarket, or a socially distanced hangout, we’ve got your style essentials covered.
Colours Colours Colours
This applies to every item in this list. Pick your colours. Fall is the season for earth tones. Your greens, browns, maroons etc. It’s just so fitting for the season and elevates your look ten-fold just by picking the right colours. As we head into the colder season, darker colours (like dark wash jeans) are also a better use now.
Earth Tones & Darker Colours
Essential #1: Sweaters
I love sweaters. They’re so versatile. They can be worn casually on their own, as a layering piece or paired with a shirt for a more formal look.
Up your arsenal with different materials for a different weather conditions. Stick with these materials:
• Cotton
• Wool
• Cashmere
Essential #2: Turtlenecks
I have a love-hate relationship with turtlenecks. They’ve never been very flattering on me, though it’s admittedly been a while since I tried one on. I should give it another shot. There’s no denying that some people just look so stylish in the fall/winter time when they add a turtleneck to their outfit. As with sweaters, it’s a fantastic layering piece, particularly as a base layer since it is thinner than a sweater. Try one in a darker color such as black (black is almost always flattering) and add it to your wardrobe. Dare I say throw on some glasses as well?
Essential #3: Chinos
No fashionable list would be complete without chinos. Chinos are some of the most, if not THE most versatile pants you can own. They come in a ton of different colours and fits which make them useable in practically every situation.
Coffee date surrounded by falling autumn leaves? Dark green (orange?) slim fit chinos. Business meeting? Navy blue/beige chinos. Grabbing some drinks on a yacht in Monaco? White chinos.
Relaxed straight fit, slim fit or skinny….tapered to the ankle or folded above the ankle…paired with sneakers, boots or loafers, the combinations are practically endless. I probably need to make a separate article just for chino ideas & outfits.
Essential #4: Jackets
Tis the season of jackets. As with most of the items on this list, jackets come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Fall is perfect because it isn’t too hot or cold, so that allows for the thinner, more fashionable jackets to make an appearance.
- • The pea coat
- • The bomber jacket
- • The denim jacket
- • The leather jacket
- • The blazer
- • The hoodie
There really are many options when it comes to jackets. Yes, some of them can be a bit on the expensive side, but they’re a great investment in terms of not just your style but your confidence as well, and you can’t put a price on the benefits of confidence. I highly recommend that at least over the years, build your wardrobe with these jackets and strut around like you own the season.
Essential #5: Boots
If you don’t own a pair of boots yet my friend, now is the time to get one. Boots generally come out of hibernation in the fall. They look absolutely great with most outfits and stand apart from your everyday sneakers. Believe it or not, one of the first few things people (women in particular) notice are your shoes, and boots just take it to a whole nother level.
• The Casual Boot
• The Chelsea Boot
• The Chukka Boot
While there are certainly more types of boots, I believe the three mentioned above are the essentials.
